Located between Adelong and Batlow (22km from Tumut)

Event information

Registration for this event closes  Wed 16 Sep 2026 21:00.

Activity Overview

  • Survival themed camp at Wondalga

  • This camp is for venturers and scouts. Cubs linking to scouts are welcome.

  • There will be youth members and leaders attending this camp from Tumut Scout Group.

  • The camp will be held at Wondalga Scout Camp, Old Tumbarumba Road, Wondalga.

  • Wondalga is a Scout Camp and is very special to Tumut Scout Group Members.

  • This camp burnt in the Black Summer Fires and is still being repaired and managed through this.

  • There is usually mobile service at the site, however, obviously we can not guarantee this.

  • We are not cooking dinner on Friday night, we will eat on the way to Wondalga. 3.5 hr drive.

  • We will be setting up camp on Friday night. It will be dark. We will set up tents.  However if after setting up their tents, youth and/or adults wish to set up tarp shelters and sleep in these on Friday night, this will be supported.

  • Youth will be sleeping in accordance with section (venturers or scouts) and gender. We will be camping in our Scout Group Tents or youth owned tents or shelters (optional).

  • Youth will be making shelters over the weekend and may choose to sleep in these shelters. Sleeping in shelters is not mandatory, but is part of survival skill badgework at higher levels. No one will be forced to sleep in improvised shelters, but all will be making shelters.

  • Leaders may also disallow sleeping in improvised shelters if they deem the shelters or conditions to be unsafe.

  • Other activities that are planned for the weekend (subject to time constraints and weather limitations) include: knife safety session, use of axes, water purification, food/resource foraging, fire lighting, fishing skills, camouflage and signalling, possible cordage making, survival principles and survival kits.

  • There are inherent risks in this activity and youth who are not able to follow safety directions may have their involvement in some activities limited. Repeated unsafe behaviour will result in parents being called to collect their child.

  • Knife Safety Session- further details below that must be adhered to.

  • We will pack down on Sunday morning and be ready for collection just after lunch on Sunday.

  • The cost for this camp for 1st Finley Scout Group members is $40. This includes a $5.50 Wondalga Camp Fee, which we will forward to Riverina Scouts. Some meals and a small fuel charge for our drivers.

  • All scouts are asked to bring their own light weight Saturday evening meal. This is something that dosn’t need refrigerating, dehydrated and balanced. We will have several options for cooking their meal ie. fire, metho fuel stove or gas burner. (please ask other scouts that did scout hike for ideas on what to bring or Steve and Rose)
  • Breakfast and lunch x2 will be provided by Finley Scouts. Vegetarian option available Breakfast will be continental and bacon and eggs. Lunch cold meat and salad wraps.

Knife Safety Session

  • Knife safety sessions will be directly supervised. Hawk will be the activity leader for knife safety.

  • Youth may bring knives that meet Scouts Australia policies. Hawk will inspect knives, and if they are not suitable they will not be able to be used and will be returned after camp.

  • Knives cannot be fixed blade knives in scouting. Knives can only be folding blade knives.

  • For youth to participate in knife safety sessions they MUST have a personal first aid kit within arms reach. This is non-negotiable. Particularly our older youth members should already have a personal first aid kit and this should include first aid supplies for cuts and bleeding.

  • Venturers who attended the ACT Survival School will be assisting with the safety briefing of this activity, including the "blood bubble" and "triangle of death" concepts.

Improvised Shelters

If youth wish to bring tarps and cordage, or pegs for shelter building, this would be great.

Notes- for sleeping in shelters, inflatable mats are at risk of puncture. Extra blankets are recommended, but these are likely to get dirty, so nothing precious.

Survival Kit

Youth should bring their survival kit (or the beginning of their survival kit- some may only have a few items for example or a container/bag). Some scouts may not have anything yet and that's ok. This is for badgework purposes and for discussion about what a good survival kit contains. This is something our older youth members have looked at in the past on every survival camp attended and survival discussion on section nights. In addition some of our current scouts and linking cubs have looked at survival kits in cubs also. We want youth members to be thinking about preparation and how they may survive in an emergency. For those who do not have a survival kit or items at all, this will be a great opportunity to start that process. Survival kits have common elements but are individual.

Fishing

The creek at the camp is not a trout stream. As part of survival techniques we hope to fit some fishing in. Youth may wish to bring fishing equipment, particularly equipment they would be likely to have with them or in their survival kit or be able to create in a survival situation.
